Frequently Asked Questions

What is The Fern made of?

The leaves are made from sustainably-sourced oak and the frame is made from construction grade steel.

Where can The Fern be shipped to?

We can ship The Fern to almost anywhere! We work with you to work out shipping options and costs, simply get in touch to find out more.

Do you offer a discount if I buy more than one?

We certainly do! Let us know how many you’d like to order and we’ll work out a discount rate for you.

Are there other products in The Fern range?

Yes certainly, we offer The Mini Fern for children, The Double Fern for two people as well as The Fern Stool for perching or putting your feet up! And we have protective Fern Covers to keep your Fern looking beautiful for longer. Let us know if any of these are of interest and we’d be happy to send you further details.

Is The Fern suitable for outdoors?

The Fern has been created as a garden seat, as such it is designed to go outside. Each Fern is finished with weather proof treatment to each of it’s components, which includes a protective oil on the steel frame to prevent rust and 3 coats of exterior varnish to protect the leaves.

Can The Fern be left outside all year round?

The short answer is yes. Just like all garden furniture, however, to preserve it’s finish and life-expectancy we recommend covering it during the winter (ask us about Fern Covers) or even bring it inside during those cold, wet months to keep it looking at it’s best.

Who designed The Fern?

The Fern is designed by award-winning garden designer Joe Francis. Joe has a degree in Product Design and has always loved designing and making things. He designed The Fern as the centre piece of a show garden he created for RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. He also developed the prototype and made all the early versions in his workshop.

How does The Fern fix into the ground?

Many people who first see The Fern assume it must be dug into the ground or secured in concrete in some way. However, as the spine doubles back under the seat it is able to sit completely independently, as such, it can be lifted and placed almost anywhere you’d like to put it. We do recommend pegging the base down in exposed situations, we’re happy to advise accordingly on this.

It’s an interesting and unusual piece of furniture, have you sought to protect the design?

Yes indeed, the design is protected in over 88 countries via the Hague International Design Protection Organisation. In addition, its name “The Fern” also has its own Trademark.

How big is The Fern?

The standard Fern is approximately 1 meter wide, 1.5 meters tall and 1.5 meters deep (or approximately 3 feet wide, 5 feet tall and 5 feet deep in old money).
